Ericka had always hated being the idea of being the new kid in town. But now, it was her reality. She was the one that didn't know anyone, didn't know her way around a city, and didn't know what to do about it. So of course, the first place to check out would be the bookstore. A nerd at heart, she always had to go to where she felt safest. 'Ahh. A book that makes it all bettter.' she thought while picking up 'The Giver'. She'd always been facinated by the thought of a Eutopia. Ericka looked around. People were there. But it didn't seem like anyone was going to say anything to her.

Roxanne stepped out of the red 2007 Jeep Wrangler which she had parked in front of the bookstore, the white and green Burberry short board hanging out of the back. She was in torn, jean shorts along with a green bikini top and a black tank top. Her black flip flops clicked as she walked up to the store, pulling out the ten dollar bill her cousin had given her.
She sighed, it was unusually crowded with a bunch of tourists today. She waved to the store owner, Mr. Paul Weikle, who was a rather chubby old man with glasses and a lisp. He always seemed to have a plaid shirt, which made her think of her surfboard which sat comfortably in the back of the jeep. Tossing that thought aside, she squeezed past a few elementary school kids who were looking at a few coloring books to take with them and went straight to the paperback book section.
She noticed a few people from her school that came here, and waved at them with a smile. They were, of course, the beach bums that nobody thought would amount up to anything- but Roxanne knew them better. They would be pros at what they did someday and everything would be right.

Ericka noticed a new presence in the room. A girl. She looked about her age and decently friendly. After debating talking to the girl for 2.3 seconds, she walked over to her and plainly said, 'Hey. I'm Ericka.' The book still in her hand, along with her bag strap. She kept her eyes straight on the girl. Intensity is always best. She thought.
[sorry so short. dealing with friends who can't keep themselves entertained for a solid minute.]

Well this was something different. Someone Roxanne hadn’t noticed before had just come up and introduced themselves to her. “Uh- hey; I’m Roxanne.” She said smiling back at the girl. They were around the same height, possibly the same age. The girl looked to be new- seeing her tan wasn’t as dark as the other locals. She wasn’t dressed in any “Welcome to Key West” attire, therefore she figured she was new to the place: not a local- but not a tourist either.
A little kid came running between the girls, and Roxanne stepped back and to the side to stay out of traffic. She hated people bumping into her. It wasn’t a pet peeve of hers, because she did not have too many, but it did become bothersome once in a while. Especially during the breaks. She turned to the bookshelf for a quick second to pick up one of the few copies of the Alchemist, before turning towards Ericka. “So- Ericka, you new here?”
[[hahaa, no problem.]]

Hmm. She seems pretty nice. Not one to be mean for no reason. Possible friend later. Ericka noted. 'Yeah. I'm new. Is it that obvious?' At first glance, the girl seemed like just another beach bum. But after hearing her talk, she heard a bit of intellect. Something she didn't think would be around here.
Well I can at least tell people home that I know one person. But I would really like to find some guys to hang around. They're always easier to be around and a lot more fun. At that moment, her phone started ringing. 'Dammit,' she muttered under her breath after seeing who it was from. She quickly silenced it and put it away.

“Obvious? Nah…” She said flipping the book over to check the price, then looking back at Ericka, “actually- yeah, it is obvious. Your tan isn’t as dark as everyone else’s but you’re not wearing a souvenir shirt or anything like that.” She said laughing, nodding over at a group of girls their age with “Key West” tanks and visors on. “Plus—you don’t seem too excited to be here.” She added in, with a small laugh before shuffling through a pile of books to the side. “Hmmm… if you’re an avid reader, the good ones are usually at the bottom of this barrel. Mr. Weikle saves them for his avid readers to snag.” She said picking up Tess of the D’Urberville. “So how long have you been here?” She asked, glancing at the cell phone as it made a small attempt to ring.
The store was getting busy, as it was just about the only place on this side of town that sold the coloring books and travel guides.

'Wow. So I need to tan more to become a 'local'?' she said with a small smile. Ericka looked at the book Roxanne pulled out with an intrigued look on her face.
'Yeah. I read a bit. she said with a sarcastic tone. A bit. Sure. I only brought 3 suitcases full of books and have a book allowance. This girl seemed nice. Possibly a bit too nice for her taste. But, as Ericka had learned many times before, first impressions aren't always the correct ones.
'Mhm? Oh. My plane landed today. I'm a bit jet-lagged and I need something good to do to wake me up.'

Roxanne laughed, “So you come to a bookstore…” This girl seemed like a nerd in disguise, but she did not want to judge. “Usually around here- we go surfing, or wakeboarding, or skimboarding…” She thought for a minute, “The beach is where to go to have fun.” She said with a smile.
Her phone rang the voice of Jimmy Buffet and Cheeseburgers in Paradise. “Oh- excuse me, it’s my dad.” She said sliding the LG Shine to its ‘accept’ position. “Hey dad, what’s up?” She said into it. She laughed a bit before asking how the expedition was and if he was coming home this month. She sighed when he said “no,” he wasn’t, and laughed when he was talking about how he almost fell into a J-Pod circle. “Wow that must be amazing. Send me pictures, ok?” She finally asked him before saying a quick ‘I love you’ and hanging up.
“Sorry about that. My dad is on one of those field studies for NOAA about the whales, and he likes to keep me updated.” She said before checking the time, “Anyway- I got’ta go, but I’ll see you around more than likely. There’s not too many places to go here, and I live on the beach- so yeah. Nice meeting you.” She said sweetly before paying for her books.
She then turned around and said, “Oh! If you stop by Sloppy Joe’s sometime tomorrow- I could give you a free drink- sort of like a welcome to town gift or something.”

'Yeah. I'm a nerd occasionally. But it's okay.' she said with a smile. One that was much more genuine than any others she'd given that day. Hmm. Beach. But which bathing suit would she wear? Ericka thought while Roxanne answered her phone.
'Hmm. Dad. Lucky you. And nice meeting you too. I'm guessing I'll see you around.' She pulled out her wallet and grabbed a twenty from inside to pay the cashier for her book. And after a quick check of the time on her brand new Pantech Duo, she walked out of the store, bag in hand, and right into her taxi. New apartment first for a quick change. Then to the beach.
